A North Devon farmworker has been banned from driving after he stopped a police officer to ask him directions.

The driver, Grant McCarthy was looking for a fast food restaurant when he pulled his motorbike over to ask a police officer for directions.

It was when the 22 year old began asking for directions that the police officer thought that he was unfit to be driving.

The court heard that he was unsteady on his feet and his speech was slurred.

After going a positive breath test it has been reported that McCarthy became aggressive and verbally abusive towards the police officer.

He also made a number of violent threats.

Police backup arrived and McCarthy was pinned to the floor and transported to Barnstaple police station.

On being tested his reading was 46mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath. The legal limit for drink driving in England & Wales is currently 35mg.

McCarthy pleaded guilty to drink driving, resisting a constable in the execution of his duty, driving without insurance and driving a vehicle without a valid MOT.

McCarthy was sentenced to a 16 month driving ban and fined £305.
